Psychiatrist Alexandra Bennett (Bonnie Franklin), dumped by her lover and finding she must counsel herself as a deserted woman, is thrown together with divorced landscape designer Nick Richmond (Robert Klein) by her married best friends, Karen and Phillip (Tyne Daly, Peter Bonerz), but they have trouble making this made-in-heaven twosome stick.
