Piranha II: The Spawning

1981, Movie, R, 95 mins

Although the title suggests that this is a sequel to Joe Dante's PIRANHA, it isn't. Totally unrelated to the earlier film, PIRANHA II takes place at a Caribbean resort that is suddenly besieged by the ravenous fish. As in the Dante film, this strain of killer piranha is the result of a government experiment. Unlike the Dante film, however, these piranha can fly and survive outside the water. Sure. Of course, the little critters gather their forces and attack the resort, leaving lots of bloody bodies behind. The special effects are awful (the piranhas are obviously hand puppets) and the script worse. Executive producer Assonitis funded the picture with foreign money and hired an unknown director (Cameron), who would go on to make a couple of other films you may have heard of--THE TERMINATOR, ALIENS and TITANIC. leave a comment
