Pippi In The South Seas: Review
OK kiddie film based on Lindgren's novel character. In her second film as Pippi, Nilsson is left to baby-sit Perrson and Sundberg, promising their parents never to leave them alone. A dilemma arises, however, when Nilsson finds a note in a bottle on the beach. The note is from Nilsson's father, Wolgers, a sea-faring man who begs to be rescued from a band of pirates in the South Seas. Not wanting to break her word to Persson and Sundberg's parents but having to save her father, Nilsson decides to take the kids, along with a pet parrot and monkey, with her. She rigs a balloon to carry them, and off they sail to the South Seas. She eventually finds her father being tortured by the pirates, who are trying to learn where Wolgers buried some gold when his ship was grounded. Nilsson comes to the rescue, frees her father, and then leads the nasty pirates through a series of adventures that has them left behind on the island, while Nilsson, Wolgers, Persson, and Sundberg sail off in the pirate ship. Technically shaky at times (the editing and English dubbing are poor), the movie will prove fun for young children, especially avid readers of the Longstocking series.
