1976, Movie, PG, 103 mins

Director Edwards and co-author Maurice Richlin created the Clouseau character in the first PINK PANTHER picture, and in 1974 THE RETURN OF THE PINK PANTHER took in huge amounts at the theaters. Consequently, this one was rushed out to take advantage of the wave, and it looks it. That's not to say that there aren't plenty of laughs in the picture, but it lacks a credible story, something that was present in the earlier ones. Lom, the head of the French police, has been driven mad by Sellers's behavior and is now incarcerated, with Sellers sitting in the chief's seat. Lom escapes, kidnaps scientist Vernon, who has invented a "death ray," and he threatens to use it to end the world unless the authorities see fit to turn over Sellers to Lom. Down plays a Soviet spy who is put on the case but defects, NINOTCHKA-style, because she falls in love with Sellers. There are some marvelous sight gags, but the film goes over the top into mindless farce at times, destroying much of the Chaplinesque believability that Sellers had earlier engendered. leave a comment
