Wartime propaganda starring Tone as a controversial pilot who volunteers for a dangerous mission that will almost certainly lead to his death. After takeoff, his various friends and acquaintances recall the events that brought Tone to this fate. Kelly tells those gathered that Tone used to be a successful lawyer, but he unwittingly became involved with a right-wing, neofascist politician who was seeking the governorship of a southern state. When Tone finally learned of the politician's true ambitions, he revealed the disturbing facts to the public, ruining his own career. Having become obsessed with stamping out fascism, Tone joined the Air Corps in the hopes of seeing as much action as possible. Immediately after Kelly relates the tale, Tone establishes radio contact with the base and tells his buddies that he is going to crash his plane into a Japanese aircraft carrier in a kamikaze-like suicide dive. This was Kelly's second film, and he took the role to prove to the studios that he was not just a song-and-dance man, and could handle dramatic roles as well. leave a comment
