A fun melange of college antics, songs, football, and love, PIGSKIN PARADE marked 15-year-old Judy Garland's first feature and the only time she was ever loaned out by MGM. The frail plot involves a football team from mythical Texas State University, coached by Jack Haley and led by Stuart Erwin, a man who can hurl watermelons further than most people can hit a golf ball. By mistake, the team is invited to play Yale in New Haven. Haley's wife, snappy Patsy Kelly, has as much to do with coaching the team as her husband does. The film is full of actors who went on to become stars. Alan Ladd does a bit and sings with the Yacht Club Boys, playing undergrads who've been in the freshman class for the past six years. Betty Grable, Lynn Bari, and Tony Martin also appear. The plot is forgettable and so are most of the songs, but PIGSKIN PARADE is full of enjoyable fun. Tunes by Lew Pollack and Sidney Mitchell are: "Balboa," "The Texas Tornado," "It's Love I'm After" (sung by Judy Garland), "You're Simply Terrific" (Tony Martin, Dixie Dunbar), "You Do the Darndest Things, Baby" (Jack Haley, Arline Judge), "T.S.U. Alma Mater," "Hold That Bulldog," (sung by the company). The Yacht Club Boys chimed in with some songs of their own, including: "Down With Everything" (sung by Alan Ladd and the Boys), "We'd Rather Be In College," and "Woo! Woo!" Generally, football musicals had songs for their own sake, but in this film most of the tunes really do have something to do with the story, one of the first times an attempt was made to integrate music with plot for an original film musical. Erwin was so good he received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor. leave a comment
