1951, Movie, NR, 59 mins

With the advent of television came a number of goofy schemes dreamed up by movie producers to combat the new competing medium (3-D, CinemaScope, and Smell-O-Vision among the more notable). The message from the producers of PIER 23 seems to be, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em." A near-hour-long programmer that follows the beat of private detective Beaumont (later the "Beaver's" dad on TV) in two separate half-hour adventures, PIER 23 is basically a television show that could be split and shown on separate nights. The first mystery places Beaumont in the sweaty world of professional wrestling, where he investigates the strange demise of a wrestler who died of a heart attack while in the ring. He goes through the usual snooping, flirting, and head-banging until he comes up with the solution. After a brief break (insert commercial here), Beaumont returns to help a distraught priest talk an escaped convict back into prison. After a mix-up and a death, Beaumont again goes through the snooping, flirting, and head-banging until he comes up with the answers to the mystery. leave a comment
