Norton returns from WW I and moves his family to Northern Ireland. He takes work as a sign painter and encourages his son's talent for painting. When Norton is killed helping to put out a fire in a shop, the townsfolk save their money to send the boy off to art school. Eventually he becomes a respected painter (the real-life father of the director of this film).
