An amiable romantic comedy, built around the disarming persona of Friends fave Jennifer Aniston. Kate Mosely (Aniston) is a perky career girl, climbing the corporate ladder in the lies are the air we breathe world of advertising (which allows Gulden's mustard what might be the best product placement of all time). Kate has the usual entourage: overbearing, grandchild-jonesing mom (Olympia Dukakis), plain and sensible married friend (Ileana Douglas), officious boss (Kevin Dunn) and assorted gossipy officemates, but conspicuous by his absence is the fabulous boyfriend a great gal like this deserves. Through a series of no more unbelievable than usual contrivances, Kate finds herself entangled in an increasingly awkward snarl of fibs involving Nick (Jay Mohr), the goofy guy she met once at a friend's wedding and whom everyone now believes she's engaged to marry. The faux fiancee proves a good career move, but wreaks havoc with Kate's already rocky personal life. Does all this put you in mind of a Doris Day- Rock Hudson comedy, perhaps even LOVER COME BACK, also set against the backdrop of Madison Avenue chicanery? It should: Those lighter-than-air confections are obviously the model for this bit sweet sorbet of a movie, except that Day never said the "s" word or told her mother she'd spent the night having sex -- "the dirty kind" -- with the office wolf (Kevin Bacon). Aniston's sure comic timing smooths over many a rough spot, and just as Nick's unassuming virtues grow on Kate, the slightly geeky Mohr seems increasingly charming as the movie unfolds. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
