This lyrical Japanese romance (the debut film of woman director Kayo Hatta) tells the story of 16-year old mail-order bride who finds herself wedded to a middle-aged plantation laborer in 1918 Hawaii. Effective as a portrait of the evolution of an unusual marriage; instructive as a
reminder of the racist exploitation of Japanese labor that built Hawaii and much of California.
