It's hard to say what, if anything, happens in Peter Weir's mystifying tale about a group of turn-of-the-century Australian schoolgirls who go missing from a school outing, but that's part of the film's eerie power. While the rest of their classmates doze in the hot afternoon sun, four young girls and a teacher wander into the craggy cliffs of Hanging Rock; three of them will disappear without a trace.
