Pick A Star: Review
Although Laurel and Hardy were top-billed in some of the studio publicity, their scenes are totally extraneous to the movie and could have been cut. However, since they get most of the laughs in this trite story, their loss would have resulted in a huge hole. Lawrence is a sweet young Iowa girl who comes to Hollywood as part of a contest. But it's all publicity and soon no one will pay any attention to her at the studio. She knocks out the studio bosses when Haley, the publicity man, arranges a screen test, and she winds up as a full-fledged actress. In the course of events, she meets Auer, an egotistical movie star, makes friends with Patsy Kelly, who chimes in with some nice wisecracks, and gets to see how movies are made as Laurel and Hardy show the studio visitors the intricacies of "breakaway" bottles and furniture in a saloon brawl for a western they are shooting. Of course, both men manage to knock themselves out when they pick up the wrong props for the demonstration. The other Laurel and Hardy sequence is the old wheeze where Hardy swallows a harmonica and makes a funny noise each time Laurel pushes in Babe's huge stomach. It begins when Laurel is seen with a horn and Hardy tells him to put it down since he doesn't know how to play it. Laurel proves he can and makes the horn sound like a tuba while playing "Old Black Joe" (Stephen Foster). Laurel then picks up a harmonica and plays "Reuben, Reuben." Not to be outdone, Hardy pulls out a teeny harmonica and does "Listen to the Mockingbird," then Laurel retaliates by doing the same tune, only better. Hardy is nonplussed, so he puts the harmonica under his tongue and does "Yankee Doodle," then swallows the harmonica. Laurel ends the scene by playing Hardy's stomach in a marvelous rendition of "Pop Goes the Weasel!" and that's the comedy highlight of this otherwise forgettable movie.
