A musical biography of France's most beloved singer, Edith Piaf, PIAF--THE EARLY YEARS depicts her rise to fame in the legendary Paris of the 1920s and early 1930s. Beginning with her birth, the film works its way through her early temporary blindness, the street performances with her father, and her relationship with half-sister Simone Berteaut (played by Christophe), who wrote the book on which the film is based. Her career skyrocketed with the release of her first hit, "L'Accordianiste." PIAF--THE EARLY YEARS was originally released in France in 1974, and an English version was prepared for US release. But what was actually released in the US eight years later is a subtitled version. Another period of Piaf's life is presented in Claude Lelouch's EDITH AND MARCEL (198), detailing her affair with boxer Marcel Cerdan. The great chanteuse can be glimpsed in a handful of films including Jean Renoir's FRENCH CAN-CAN (1956) and Sacha Guitry's ROYAL AFFAIRS AT VERSAILLES (1957).
