PHAT BEACH
starstarstarstar
Ever wondered what one of those silly '60s beach party movies would be like if all the dorky white kids were dorky African-American kids? Someone apparently did, and this is the result. Tubby, sensitive Benny (Jermaine "Huggy" Hopkins) wants to spend the summer taking a poetry course, but his dad makes him get a job slinging burgers. On-the-make best buddy Durrel (Brian Hooks) persuades Benny to ditch the loser job and take a road trip to Southern California, where Durrel plans to implement a get-rich-quick scheme involving inexpensive sunglasses. The two get into a variety of unlikely scrapes that all work out for the best, despite a drive-by cameo appearance from thuggish rap star Coolio and his remarkable hair. Many pretty young ladies cavort in bathing suits that would have made Annette Funicello blanch, and the filmmakers get a lot of mileage out of the obligatory volleyball tournament. leave a comment
