The second of three Nick Carter mysteries is a well-paced and finely directed low-budgeter with the supersleuth and his assistant, Meek, off to Panama to investigate the sinkings of a British company's ships when they leave the canal laden with supplies for the Allies. Eventually Pidgeon
discovers that a big-time American gangster, Schildkraut, is behind the operation, and he perseveres to get the evidence to end the crook's activities. Jacques Tourneur's careful direction (he also did the first Nick Carter picture the previous year) is visually fascinating as usual. This was
followed by SKY MURDER, also 1941.
