A good idea gone very, very bad, this loose remake of "The Phantom of the Opera" updates the classic tale's setting and climactic battle scene, but replaces the pathos and drama of the original with slasher gimmicks and predictable characters. When a new mall opens on the spot where the eponymous Eric is presumed to have perished in a house fire, the still very much alive young man takes up residence in secret digs beneath the mall. Using high-tech surveillance gear, he monitors the comings and goings of his former girl friend, Melody (Kari Whitman), whom he both protects and surreptitiously courts. Meanwhile, Melody and a journalist friend (Derek Rydall) get to the bottom of the scandal that resulted in the fire that is thought to have killed Eric. When Melody's affection for the journalist rouses Eric's jealously, things really heat up. Because of its familiar premise, PHANTOM OF THE MALL: ERIC'S REVENGE is forced to rely on style and suspense to carry it through; unfortunately, Richard Friedman's flat-footed direction is not up to the task. Moreover, although there are plenty of graphic murders and ghastly make-up effects, they are so matter-of-factly handled that gorehounds will be disappointed. leave a comment
