The Phantom Express

1932, Movie, NR, 65 mins

starstarstarstar
A surprisingly effective poverty row mystery in which a group of villains use a "phantom" train to force oncoming trains to think they're about to have a head-on collision. The crooks hope that the constant brake slamming will sour the passengers on the railroad and they'll seek other modes of transportation, forcing the president of the railroad to sell the line. Bruce (Collier), the playboy son of the railroad's president, launches his own investigation into the mysterious wrecks. The solution to this puzzling mystery is a clever surprise and well worth waiting for. Director Emory Johnson had access to actual interior and exterior locations of the Southern Pacific Raliroad, and made the most of the yards, machine shops, and roundhouses (this film should be of great interest to railroad buffs). Dark, moody, and quite atmospheric, this is one of the best films to come from Majestic Pictures. Actress Sally Blane, who plays Collier's love interest, is the sister of Loretta Young. leave a comment
