An entertaining comedy about growing up and based on a book of cartoons entitled "Memoirs of a Young Man." PETIT CON centers on Michel Choupon (Bernard Brieux), an 18-year-old living with his middle-class, right-wing family. He longs to break free and soon befriends a variety of people--a bohemian couple who try to get him into bed, a bookwormish girl who has sexual fantasies about Joseph Stalin and Charles De Gaulle, and a pretty Arab girl. Brieux turns in a fine performance, convincingly portraying the awkward search for identity that accompanies adolescence. PETIT CON (which translates as "Little Jerk") is the third adaptation of Gerard Lauzier's volumes of cartoons and the first that he directs. This one proves more of a success than the previous two--THE RAT RACE by Francois Leterrier (1980) and PSY by Philippede Broca (1981). (In French; English subtitles.) leave a comment
