A crushing disappointment for fans of the popular Stephen King novel on which it is based, PET SEMATARY takes a deeply disturbing premise--the collapse of the American family--and turns it into just another shock-a-minute horror show, with little in the way of character development, thematic exploration, or even simple suspense. Dr. Louis Creed (Dale Midkiff), wife Denise (Rachel Creed), son Gage (Miko Hughes), and daughter Ellie (Blaze Berdahl) move from Chicago to Maine, where neighbor Jud Crandall (Fred Gwynne) tells the doctor about the strange history of the pet cemetery and Indian burial ground that lie behind Creeds' house. When the family cat is hit by a truck, Dr. Creed inters the dead pet in the burial ground, only to have it come back to life foul-smelling and vicious. Before PET SEMATARY is over several other dead creatures return to life, loosing their demented, brutal wrath on family and friends. While the King source material forcefully taps into some deep-seated fears, PET SEMATARY (which was to have been directed by George Romero) squanders its potential through the ham-handed direction of Mary Lambert (SIESTA), who continually goes for visceral shocks at the expense of the more deeply disturbing psychological themes inherent in the material. Lambert's failure is further aggravated by the bland performances of Dale Midkiff and Denise Crosby, and by the holes King has left in his screenplay. leave a comment
