This was the penultimate picture for Harlow, who was already suffering from the illness that caused the uremic poisoning that took her life. It was also the only picture that she and Taylor made together. He was the darling of the MGM lot and worked with almost every leading lady in Culver City and had just come off a sensational appearance opposite Greta Garbo in CAMILLE. Making a comedy was just the ticket for Taylor, if only to get out of the tubercular mood of his last film, and this was a nice way to do that. Hard to believe, but Van Dyke (known as "One-Take" because he moved so quickly) shot the entire movie in less than two weeks! Harlow is an American widow in England and in deep trouble paying her bills. Taylor is the scion of an important family, a devil-may-care playboy who does a short stretch in jail for having sold a car that he didn't own. His father, Clive, and his brother, Owen, don't think he can ever reform his ways. Harlow's house and personal property are besieged by creditors, and Taylor gets the job of watching the place to make certain she doesn't try to move any of her possessions out in the dead of night. Harlow would like to marry Owen, even though she doesn't love him, in the hope that a wealthy marriage will erase her debts, thinking she can always shed him later. The truth is that Taylor's family is just as insolvent, and Owen, thinking that Harlow is rich, wants to marry her to help their straits. Taylor knows what's happening and revels in his knowledge, going so far as playing the role of a butler at a party Harlow tosses for her prospective hubby. Owen sees Taylor and demands Harlow sack him, something she can't do as he is there on orders from the sheriff, although she doesn't tell Owen that. Owen hands Taylor a few pounds to leave. The wedding day dawns but the sheriff and the moving men enter to get all the expensive gear in the residence. Owen learns that Harlow is even more broke than he is, so he makes a quick exit. Taylor and Harlow have been falling in love all through the movie and decide to cement their attraction by hopping aboard the truck carrying the furniture and finding the nearest man of the cloth to pronounce them man and wife. Not that much laughter but some good shots of Harlow in revealing clothes and one "beefcake" sequence with Taylor in a bathtub, which was presumably put in to give the ladies' hearts something to flutter over. This is a remake of the 1931 film THE MAN IN POSSESSION. leave a comment
