People Are Funny

1945, Movie, NR, 93 mins

The title of this one comes from a radio show which did its best to persuade people to do ridiculous things in exchange for gifts. Reed is the producer who pirates the "People Are Funny" idea from small-time announcer Haley in order to make station sponsor Vallee happy. Many of the performers were popular radio personalities of the time; this type of cinema-radio tie-in became a genre as picture producers attempted to capture the audiences of another medium. Songs include "I'm in the Mood for Love" (Dorothy Fields, Jimmy McHugh), "Angelina" (Doris Fisher, Allan Roberts), "The Old Square Dance is Back Again" (Don Reid, Henry Tobias), "Every Hour on the Hour" (Don George, Duke Ellington), and "Alouette" (traditional). leave a comment
