Heston turns in a superb performance as an aging cowboy accepting and loving his life in the West. Set in Montana in the 1880s, WILL PENNY shows us the rugged details and the day-to-day hardships that cowboys encountered, concentrating less on the glory than on the guts. With winter approaching, Heston and fellow cowpokes Majors and Zerbe try to find employment. In the process, they are ambushed by Pleasence, a demented preacher with three sons, one of whom is killed by Heston. Pleasence vows to get revenge. Heston finds work, as well as romance, in the form of Hackett, who is traveling with her son to California to meet her husband. Pleasence stages another ambush, wounding Heston. As he recovers, he grows fond of Hackett. Pleasence, determined to finish off Heston, captures him but cannot prevent him from escaping to save Hackett from the sexual yearnings of Pleasence's sons. Heston kills Pleasence and shoots his sons. When Hackett asks him to stay with her and farm, he refuses and rides on, proclaiming that he is a cowboy and "don't know nothing else." WILL PENNY, with its fine direction, realistic atmosphere, stunning photography (Ballard in top form), and great performance by Heston, still failed to make even a dent at the box office, grossing only $1.3 million. The public instead preferred to check out another Heston picture released at the same time--PLANET OF THE APES. leave a comment
