Leon Isaac Kennedy joins with director Jamaa Fanaka for the third installment of the saga of Too Sweet, a young man whose boxing skills come in handy in prison. Too Sweet is boxing against a good friend when his manager slips a drug into his water bottle, turning Too Sweet into a raging monster who beats the other man to death in the ring. Next thing we know Too Sweet is on the prison bus headed up the river on a three-year manslaughter rap. A fellow prisoner describes the set-up in the joint: the warden and convicted mobster Serenghetti (Anthony Geary) are contesting each other with boxing tournaments. Too Sweet is approached by both sides and is finally pushed too far. This is certainly a long way from art, but thanks to the occasionally crude but vigorous direction of Fanaka and some bizarre humor, it is an entertaining exploitation effort. Geary, remembered as Luke on the TV soap "General Hospital," is a pleasure to watch. No treatise on penal reform, PENITENTIARY III is a welcome addition to the canon of bad prison movies. leave a comment
