Pendulum: Review
An honest Dallas cop blunders into a web of high-level corruption in this formulaic thriller. Detective Amanda Reeve (former model Rachel Hunter) is pulled off an investigation into the brutal murders of local prostitutes for a more important assignment. Respected Welland Law College professor Nigel Emerson (Robert Graham) has been found with his throat cut, and many of Dallas' most prominent citizens are Welland graduates. Haunted by her recent breakup with ambitious assistant DA William Cobb (Matt Battaglia), Reeve spends far too much time at home sucking up red wine and gazing at photos of happier days. But she plunges into the Emerson investigation, interviewing the many students who flunked the professor's notoriously difficult course in case law. One, the embittered Robert Mosely (Paige Griggs), alleges that Emerson traded good grades for sex, so Reeve pays a visit to the students who earned the highest marks in the course, Terry Weiss (Alaina Kalanj) and Melissa Regan (Stephanie Vogt). In addition to being incredibly beautiful and scantily dressed, both are the daughters of highly influential Welland alumni. They make it clear that they're empowered lesbians, pooh-pooh the suggestion that they got their grades by sleeping with Professor Emerson, and try to play head games with Reeve, who's having none of it. But further investigation into their recent activities leads her to wonder what Melissa and Terry are really up to: They've been looking into the old case of two Welland students who committed a Leopold and Loeb-like thrill killing, with the difference that their victim was a rapist who had eluded punishment. Emerson prosecuted their case and won a death penalty verdict could his murder have been a form of retribution? Meanwhile, there are new developments in the hooker murder case, which Reeve's close friend, Stephanie Lowe (Alissa Alban), is still pursuing. And so it goes, as Reeve follows her investigation's twists and turns to a conclusion that isn't quite as surprising as it's meant to be. This routine mystery is tarted up with provocative lipstick lesbian antics and weighted down by the presence of Hunter: She's not much of an actress, her noticeable New Zealand accent is conspicuously out of place on a Texas police force, and cruel though it may be to say for someone whose looks have always been her greatest asset, she doesn't look especially good.
