Peppard stars as a cynical Washington, DC, police captain who is being honored for his capture of a psychotic rapist-murderer, Lyons, just as the courts are overturning the killer's conviction because Peppard failed to read him his rights. Peppard suspects that his wife, Seberg, is having an affair; one night, when he is at a speaking engagement, she and her lover (Lewis) are found murdered in bed. Peppard becomes the prime suspect and enlists the services of Kiley, the civil rights lawyer who represented Lyons. With his prospects dim, Peppard breaks out of jail and goes in search of the person he thinks killed his wife. PENDULUM is a relatively honest examination of the US justice system. It is undermined, however, by a somewhat predictable story and plodding direction. Nonetheless, Peppard is very good as the weary police captain, and Kiley gives a convincing performance as the committed lawyer. This is one of the few features directed by George Schaefer, an Emmy Award-winning TV director. leave a comment
