Peppard stars as a cynical Washington, DC, police captain who is being honored for his capture of a psychotic rapist-murderer, Lyons, just as the courts are overturning the killer's conviction because Peppard failed to read him his rights. Peppard suspects that his wife, Seberg, is having an affair; one night, when he is at a speaking engagement, she and her lover (Lewis) are found murdered in bed. Peppard becomes the prime suspect and enlists the services of Kiley, the civil rights lawyer who represented Lyons.
