Shaporenko, a pregnant German woman, is delivered to a field hospital near enemy lines by three men: a newly graduated officer, a friendly truck driver, and a shell-shocked mute. Their route is scarred with violence, death, and hatred, but through it all they gain insight. Shaporenka
finally gives birth to her child in safety. Released in Russia in 1961, the film won a Special Gold Medal at the Venice Film Festival.
