PATHS OF GLORY
starstarstarstarstar
Stanley Kubrick's first great film is a harrowing masterpiece and one of the greatest antiwar films ever made. Kirk Douglas stars as the commander of a World War I French infantry regiment who's ordered to mount a suicide attack on an impregnable German position. When the maneuver ends in disaster, Douglas must then defend the three soldiers who are to be court-martialed as scapegoats. Stanley Kubrick's first masterpiece, and of the greatest anti-war movies of all time. In an unusual bit of casting, Kirk Douglas plays a French WWI army colonel who comes to the defense of three soldiers after an attack on a heavily fortified German position — a suicide mission ordered by an ambitious and heartless general (George Macready) — fails miserably. Never has the gulf separating armchair commanders from the poor slobs in the trenches seemed so wide. The dialogue is punchy and hardboiled — Kubrick cowrote the script with pulp fiction master Jim Thompson — and the battle scenes among the most harrowing ever filmed. A friend told me he’d heard ...

Question: A friend told me he’d heard that there’s going to be a Broadway musical based on a Stanley Kubrick movie but couldn’t remember which one. Is this true, and, if so, which movie is it? I’m guessing 2001.

Answer: Your friend is partly right: A Stanley Kubrick film has been adapted for the stage, though it’s not a musical and it’s not opening on Broadway. If I had to guess which Kubrick movie would work best as a theater piece, my first instinct would be Paths of Glory (1957), because at heart it’s a courtroom drama. But I’d be wrong: It's Dr. Strangelove, or: How I Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love the Bomb (1964), which, come to think of it, could make an excellent dark musical à la Stephen Sondheim’s sardonic Sweeney Todd. But that's not exa read more
