Shelley Winters deservedly won a Oscar for her brilliant portrayal of a racist prostitute whose blind, 18-year-old daughter (Elizabeth Hartman) falls in love with a young black man (Sidney Poitier). It's a moving story that neatly avoids melodrama. Hartman was also nominated for an Academy Award, but Poitier, who probably never gave a bad performance in his entire career, was slighted. Poignant and touching Oscar-nominated romantic drama co-stars Oscar-winner Sidney Poitier ("In the Heat of the Night," "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner"). Hartman received an Oscar-nomination and co-star Shelly Winters ("The Poseidon Adventure," "Lolita") won for Best Supporting Actress.
