Bogarde is a British officer captured during WW II by the Germans who never gives up trying to escape. As he's being marched to the POW camp, Bogarde lies down with wounded German soldiers and is taken to a hospital. He's given an Iron Cross before the Nazis realize his true identity.
Back in prison camp, he builds a tunnel, gets maps and such from the Polish underground, and escapes with Lynch, but both men are recaptured. Finally, the two men do escape by stealing a fire engine and driving it to freedom. The film is based on the true story of Sgt. Maj. Charles Coward.
