Radziwilowicz (MAN OF MARBLE) plays a cigar-smoking director (much like Godard) from Poland who is filming in the style of the great painters--Rembrandt, Delacroix, Goya, and El Greco. The film he is making is a study of light and image, but he is far behind schedule because he can never get the lighting right. A noisy parody of an Italian filmmaker keeps asking what the story is. The director places his faith in the Americans, who always come through. Schygulla is a motel owner whose image on a video screen becomes an obsession with Radziwilowicz. Huppert plays a stuttering factory worker who is trying to stir up a revolt among her coworkers. A commercial failure, PASSION is the second film from the "new" Godard after his self-imposed exile into Marxist filmmaking and French television. It is, however, a superb film with more narrative than one usually expects from Godard and a surprising amount of humor. PASSION also boasts an excellent international cast. In addition to Radziwilowicz, it includes Rainer Werner Fassbinder regular Hanna Schygulla in perhaps her most visually striking screen appearance ever, Isabelle Huppert, whom Godard perviously cast in his EVERY MAN FOR HIMSELF, and Michel Piccoli, who starred opposite Brigitte Bardot in Godard's CONTEMPT. Equal credit must go to Raoul Coutard, whose camerawork and lighting are the center of the entire film. leave a comment
