Radziwilowicz (MAN OF MARBLE) plays a cigar-smoking director (much like Godard) from Poland who is filming in the style of the great painters--Rembrandt, Delacroix, Goya, and El Greco. The film he is making is a study of light and image, but he is far behind schedule because he can never get the lighting right. A noisy parody of an Italian filmmaker keeps asking what the story is. The director places his faith in the Americans, who always come through. Schygulla is a motel owner whose image on a video screen becomes an obsession with Radziwilowicz.
