Slaska, a former overseer at Auschwitz and an SS member, is reunited with Ciepielewska, a prisoner in the concentration camp. The two had become friendly when Slaska arranged for the prisoner to meet with her lover, a fellow prisoner. Slaska also reveals the jealousy she felt over the
woman's relationship, and how she used her power to control the prisoner. Before the film was completed, director Andrzej Munk was killed in an auto accident. The unfinished picture, later pieced together by his associates, might have been a masterpiece had Munk lived. It received the
International Critics Award at Cannes in 1964, a year after its Polish release.
