A low-key western, with O'Keefe as a minister leading a wagon train to the territories. A group of escaped convicts joins the train and forces the settlers to run their wagons at a perilous pace. When they arrive in California, the convicts decide to stay on with the settlers, influenced
by their faith and example. But when it's learned that gold has been discovered, the criminals return to their old ways. Payne then sacrifices his own and his fellow cons' lives to destroy the gold mine and save the settlers.
