That Girl for Club Kids. Perky, 24-year-old Mary (Parker Posey) faces a typical Gen-X dilemma, attempting to cope simultaneously with a soul-killing day job and the blandishments of night-time Manhattan. Arrested at her Chinatown loft for throwing a rent party, Mary calls the only responsible person she knows, her stern godmother Judy (Sasha von Scherler). Judy bails her out, but delivers a lecture that plays to Mary's deepest fears: that underneath her fabulous, popular exterior, she's "a woman with no common sense." Desperate for money, Mary takes a job as a clerk at the small branch library where Judy works, but is flummoxed by the complexities of the Dewey decimal system. She continues living the nightlife while working at the library by day, even helping her friend Leo (Guillermo Diaz), an aspiring DJ, get a job there as well. Mary's path to new-found seriousness doesn't run smooth, but several romantic mishaps and goofy escapades later, she convinces Judy — and herself — that she's a changed and altogether more substantial woman. Knowing and sometimes sweetly funny, director/co-writer Daisy von Scherler Mayer's debut made online history by being the first feature film to be sneak-previewed in its entirety (albeit in short, jerky segments) on the Internet. The film is utterly inconsequential, but wears its slightness with such good-natured style that it's hard to dislike. The cast is uniformly excellent — particularly the relentlessly effervescent Posey and the imperious Sasha von Scherler, the director's mother — and the modern take on old-fashioned romantic comedy is surprisingly effective. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
