A wooden Donahue walks stiffly as a young worker trying to fit into the rich and ruthless life style of the Connecticut River Valley tobacco growers in this too-long tale. Part of his problem comes from falling in love with three different women along the way. When his mother marries a tobacco baron, Donahue goes to work for him but promptly quits because of his evil ways. After a stint in the navy, Donahue leases some land to start his own growing but cannot hire workers because of their terror of reprisals by his stepfather. Finally, a young girl and her friends help out and set the scene for the final fight between Donahue and his stepfather. Donahue beats down the baron's son when he tries to set fire to the fields, while the baron stands by and acknowledges his enemy's victory. leave a comment
