This film was greatly influenced by director-writer Gilroy's own experiences when he was sent to Paris to work on the script for THE ONLY GAME IN TOWN. There Gilroy met Lenoir, who worked as his chauffeur, and in this production Lenoir plays a chauffeur. Rogers is a scripter sent to Paris to try to salvage the remains of a screenplay that is in the middle of production. He is told that Lenoir is not to be trusted, but he discovers the contrary as the two men strike up a quick friendship. Rogers also has an affair with Hunnicutt, a British aristocrat staying in the hotel room next to his. The picture is a warm, sympathetic look at the friendship among three people, joined together for a short time. The film is short on drama, instead focusing on character study. The Paris we see is hardly the picturesque setting we've seen in so many movies. Instead, Lenoir takes Rogers to his private haunts, the Paris that only a Parisian knows. Lenoir's casting as himself was a great break for the Moroccan-born chauffeur-actor. Until this film he'd never done anything more than a bit role and had appeared in Woody Allen's LOVE AND DEATH a few years before. His near-flawless English came as the result of having met many American soldiers who occupied his country during WW II. Lenoir came to the US to plug the movie, but his dreams of becoming another Maurice Chevalier soon disappeared when the movie flopped, so he returned to Paris. leave a comment
