A well-intentioned tale of a group of boys in a military academy, some of whom have little or no family life outside the school's walls. One such youngster, Ernest, goes through a traumatic time in the school, feeling the neglect of his father. The finale has the boy taking a suicidal
canoe ride over a dam, which would have been fatal were it not for his suddenly-wiser father's unexpected intervention. Frances Farmer appears in a minor role as the sympathetic daughter of the academy's colonel.
