Yves Robert, the director responsible for THE TALL BLONDE MAN WITH ONE BLACK SHOE and its sequel, struck again with this pleasant, enjoyable mixture of comedy and drama about husbands and their affairs. Etienne (Jean Rochefort) is a Parisian civil servant who, while in his company parking lot, gazes at the bright red dress of a pretty young woman (Anny Duperey) as it is blown up above her waist by a rush of air. Although he is happily married to Marthe (Daniele Delorme, wife of director Robert) and has never even thought of having an affair, Etienne becomes enamored of this mystery woman. In the meantime, he and his three best friends witness the result of years of dalliances when one of them, Bouly (Victor Lanoux), comes home one day to find that his wife has left him, taking along his children and every last possession. Robert successfully creates a number of believable characters with honest emotions and places them in lightly humorous situations, and the result falls somewhere between broad comedy (one memorable scene has a character pretending to be blind and causing havoc in an elegant restaurant) and heartfelt drama (Bouly's reaction to his wife's departure), as if Robert was attempting a farcical French version of John Cassavetes's HUSBANDS. Many of the same names reunited for the less successful sequel, PARDON MON AFFAIRE, TOO! Remade in Hollywood as THE WOMAN IN RED. leave a comment
