Niven gives his charming best to this film but to no avail. He plays the English tutor of a Japanese ambassador's son, the cute and dimpled Ando. Niven regales Ando with tales of his daring during WW II, and when Ando and Niven are kidnaped, Ando looks to Niven for his escape. Yet Niven actually was a coward during the war and returns to timidity. Eventually he makes a successful effort to escape, though, and inspires peace and harmony among various nationalities, including the English, Japanese, and Germans, handily overcoming the traumas that haunted him for so long. The film also has some poorly choreographed karate sequences. The screenplay, a pale imitation of WEE WILLIE WINKIE with Shirley Temple, is tolerable but hampered by plodding direction. The Ray Coniff Singers provide the closing theme song, which could lull audiences to sleep. leave a comment
