Simon plays a loner who becomes a target for murderer Bernard and his mistress, Romance. The killer diverts the suspicions of angry neighbors to Simon. A mob grows more intense and Simon is killed, but leaves behind a photograph that implicates the real culprits. Duvivier, in his first
postwar French film, was far less optimistic than he had been during his Hollywood years, producing a film without any sympathetic characters. It received a special mention from the Venice Film Festival and is a fine example of
film noir stylistics.
