After an important nuclear scientist is murdered in the hospital while recovering from radiation burns, National Bureau of Investigation agent Duff is called in to investigate. With the help of the scientist's assistant, Cristal, Duff's trail leads him to an international communist conspiracy. Persoff and Jeffreys are two scientists who want to start WW III by exploding a homemade nuclear bomb in Los Angeles. Duff corners Persoff at the local communist headquarters where the bomb already has been triggered and is exposed to a deadly dose of radiation. Having nothing left to lose, he flies the bomb over the middle of the ocean, sacrificing himself to save the city. The film probably would have worked in the mid-1950s when fears of the supposed international communist conspiracy were prevalent throughout conservative filmmaking. But by 1968 such a story was a joke, made funnier by the total seriousness the film projects. The direction shows little suspense, choosing to emphasize Persoff and his madness. The final sequences are too farfetched for even the most rabid hater of communism to swallow. Dennis Hopper has a brief role as a murderer, and also appearing is Mike Farrell, who later scored with the TV version of "M*A*S*H." The picture was presold to television before its release, as was common for Earle Lyon's United Picture Corporation and Harold Goldman's Commonwealth United Entertainment releases. leave a comment
