Cameron gives a fine portrayal of a retired gunman who straps on his six-shooter once more to revenge his brother's death. Hadley is the murderer who wants to control the entire territory. Hadley is gunned down by the hero and loses his secretary to Cameron as well. A secretary in a Western? Who works for the bad guy, no less? Gwynne's lively portrayal makes the character believable and funny but then again the production team on this B flick was a cut above most. The freshness and ingenuity are the work of none other than Blake Edwards, who served as co-producer and co-writer on this, his first film. He also gives a fine performance as Hadley's baby-faced gang member. Edwards' inventiveness was appreciated in this genre, usually ridden with cliches. He went on to great renown as a director with his PINK PANTHER films, as well as witty farces like VICTOR, VICTORIA. He did make one western as a director, the well-received WILD ROVERS in 1971. Director Lesley Selander remade the movie in 1966 as THE TEXICAN. leave a comment
