PALOOKAVILLE

A goofy, lowlife comedy that wears its influences -- which range from BIG DEAL ON MADONNA STREET to ON THE WATERFRONT and MEAN STREETS -- on its sleeve. Heavy baggage for a movie so slight it's in constant danger of floating away, but the result is remarkably charming. Sid (William Forsythe) -- the brightest of a not-so-bright bunch -- lives for his smelly dogs. Sweet-natured Jerry (Adam Trese) wants a better life for his wife and baby, and volatile Russ (Vincent Gallo) needs to get out of his mother's house. Together these Jersey City dum-dums, who between them don't seem to have the wherewithal to hold up a kid's lemonade stand, decide to pull off an armored-car heist. It's all a disaster, of course, but life goes on. First-time feature director Alan Taylor pulls off a precarious balancing act, teasing low-key comedy and surprisingly delicate pathos out of material that could easily have degenerated into stereotypical faux tough-guy stuff. leave a comment
