This is a mildly amusing comedy that pokes fun at beauty contests. O'Brien enters a composite picture into competition. To his surprise, he's the winner. He needs someone to front for him and hires Davies, a hotel chambermaid. She becomes America's sweetheart, and O'Brien watches out for her. It's good fun that's well-played and effectively directed. Makeup and lighting help nicely with Davies' transition from chambermaid to beauty queen. This was the first Cosmopolitan picture released through Warner Bros. Previously Cosmopolitan's boss (and Davies' lover), William Randolph Hearst, had been handling distribution through MGM, but he made a deal which shifted the distributor as well as Miss Davies' celebrated and expensive personal bungalow which served as her makeup and changing room. leave a comment
