Paddy: Review
Cave is a butcher boy who works to support his family. Their father has run out on them and Cave is ready to do the same, irked by the constant nagging and complaining of his siblings. With the encouragement of older drinking pal O'Shea, Cave sets out on a series of amorous adventures. He has an affair with Toal (O'Shea's real-life wife), a lively widow who frequents the butcher shop. Taking a job with an insurance firm, Cave then gets involved with Molloy, a secretary. He also has an affair with Cornwell, a fiery woman who prefers a
menage a trois
. When his younger brother dies, Cave feels some remorse. His problems are compounded when Molloy announces that she is pregnant but intends to marry another because Cave is too irresponsible. He is consoled by O'Shea, who has taken up with Cass, an American tourist visiting Dublin. This film was made on a limited budget, and though it suffers from financial limitations, PADDY is a gentle, charming comedy. The lighting is poorly done and the sound often amateurish, but Cave's amiable performance more than atones for these problems. The dialog is a delight, full of clever understatements. Cave and most of the supporting cast are veterans of Ireland's Abbey Theater. Their past work together has made them a tight ensemble whose members know how to play off one another with ease.
