This programmer tells a fairly gloomy story. An ocean liner bound for San Francisco from Shanghai is thrown into turmoil when one of its passengers proves to have cholera. People drop like flies (and oh so dramatically!) until McLaglen, the chief engineer, begins an investigation. Morris and Barrie, the ship's doctor and nurse, find themselves working overtime. There are some unusual scenes for a cheap film like this, including bodies being burned in the ship's furnace. The cast is a tight ensemble, but they were much better than this film deserved. The direction tells the story with good straightforward action, but can't overcome the morbid tone. However, this film was successful and proved to be a money-maker for the studio. The film earned an Oscar nomination for Best Original Score. leave a comment
