Based on Alfred Ollivant's beloved children's book, set on the Isle of Man and previously filmed as TO THE VICTOR (1938), Rodney Gibbons' film is that rare family oriented production that doesn't glide over the flaws of its characters personalities. Anti-social tenant farmer Adam McAdam (James Cromwell) holds two bitter grudges against his nearest neighbor, landowner Keith Moore (Colm Meaney). He resents the fact that Moore's father took Owd Bob, McAdam's dog, to settle a debt, and blames the Moore family for the hardships endured by his late wife. Estranged from his daughter, who lives in America, the scowling widower's only satisfaction comes from dominating the annual sheep-herding competition. His current dog, Zac, is expected to win for a record third year in a row, and McAdam ignores the contention of his rivals that Zac is actually a sheep killer. McAdam's daughter and son-in-law are killed in a car crash, and he only reluctantly takes in his orphaned grandson, David Roberts (Dylan Provencher). David obeys his grandfather's strict rules and dutifully does his chores, but bristles when McAdam objects to his friendship with Moore's daughter, Maggie (Jemima Rooper). When Maggie's mother dies, David defies his grandfather by attending the wake; McAdam responds by threatening to abandon David to the American foster care system. Zac triumphs in the annual contest, and all's briefly right in the embittered McAdams' world. Then Zac attacks another sheep and circumstantial evidence points to Owd Bob. Dave and Maggie join forces to clear the innocent pooch, but their only chance of succeeding rests with McAdam. BABE (1995) star Cromwell anchors this realistic domestic drama about a man who's nursed a grudge until it takes over his life. Neither writers Peter Welbeck and Sharon Buckingham nor director Gibbons patronize the rural characters or excuse McAdam's self-destructive behavior, making this an unusually complex film for youngsters. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
