Overlord

1975, Movie, NR, 85 mins

This WW II film tells the story of a young British soldier, taking him from his induction and training periods to his death at Normandy on D-Day. Stirner gives a solemn, honest performance as the young man, the film's dialog and production values reflect a careful attention to detail, and John Alcott's fine black-and-white photography is blended with old newsreel footage with good effect. (Also included is rare footage of a rehearsal for D-Day held on a lonely British beach.) The film makes fine use of flashbacks, though the flash-forwarding is somewhat distracting. The overriding themes of the film are never broadly stated but are subtly revealed, and the horror and reality of war are quietly played out on both the human and panoramic levels with disturbing effect. This film was produced in association with the Imperial War Museum. leave a comment
