GET OVER IT
starstarstarstar
Anonymously titled and packaged like a vulgar teen sex comedy, this candy-colored trifle is so precious it nearly floats away on a cloud of fairy dust. Of course, fairy dust is a given when the plot is driven by a production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, conceived as a musical burlesque by pretentious drama teacher Dr. Desmond Forrest Oates (Martin Short). High school senior Berke (Ben Foster) is head over heels in love with Allison (Melissa Sagemiller), and can't believe it when she dumps him. Worse, she quickly rebounds with boy-band alumnus Striker (Shane West, of TV's Once and Again), a creep with a phony-sounding English accent. Berke's friends Felix (Colin Hanks, of TV's Roswell) and Dennis (singer Sisqó) encourage him to move on, but all Berke wants is Allison. When he learns that she and Striker are both trying out for the drama department's "A Midsummer Rockin' Night's Dream," Berke signs up too — so what if he can't sing, act or dance? Enter Kelly (Kirsten Dunst), Felix's beautiful, brainy, talented younger sister, who's also planning to audition. She helps Berke brush up on his Shakespeare, while Felix gets very antsy that his best friend is spending so much time with his little sister. As the teens rehearse Shakespeare's comedy of lovers bewitched, bothered and bewildered by mischievous fairies, they learn lessons about love and friendship that would be painful if they weren't so cute. Scripted by R. Lee Fleming Jr. (SHE'S ALL THAT) and directed by Tom O'Haver (who debuted with the equally frivolous BILLY'S HOLLYWOOD SCREEN KISS), this big-hearted bagatelle is crammed with clever lines and gorgeous visuals, notably the Max Reinhardt-inspired forest in which the youngsters imagine themselves as Shakespeare's lovers. Swoosie Kurtz and Ed Begley Jr. have a blast with the small but showy roles of Berke's painfully hip parents, who host a TV sex show called Love Matters. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
